Day 8 – Minneapolis to Spring Green

Blitzing the Driftless

Up early. Rain front moving through. Delayed start to latest possible departure. Race start.

Left Minneapolis in slight drizzle which cleared up and made our way to Nelson, WI. Met with Dave at breakfast spot in town. Ate breakfast and hit the roads. Stopped at a river overlook

Flew through the countryside for a few hours. Amazing scenery, valleys, bluffs, farms, rivers. Stopped for a drink at a roadside bar, which should’ve been sad but was really cool and friendly. Dave met a friend from his school days…50 years ago. Onward.

Blasted more roads than I could count. Started flirting with rain and cut things a bit short to avoid. Hotel with the crazy Romanian clerk. Checked in. Restaurant in town was closed. Went to cheesy river resort for crappy food, then off to Hamlet.

Hamlet was great, but long. Reminded about how Shakespeare is like a human quote machine and that play just keeps on delivering memorable lines. Had a good time and didn’t even fall asleep.

Parking lot bullshit. Put my downhill foot down and went over. Luckily, no damage. Fell straight into soft dirt, was easy to pick up. Just a bruised ego and a small exhaust burn on my calf.

Back to the hotel for a beer and shower.
